  • Cut and arrange film into flats (layout sheets resembling a film negative of text in its final form), which are used to make plates. Prepare a separate flat for each color.

  • Examines negatives and photographs to detect defective areas, using a lighted viewing table.

  • Makes proof from the film flat to determine the accuracy of the flat.

  • Strips negative from the base.

  • Aligns negatives and masks over an unexposed film in a vacuum frame to make negatives for the final film of each color.

  • Positions film negatives or positives on the light table according to the art layout, blueprint, and color register to form the film flat.

  • Cuts image window area to allow exposure to plate or film, using a razor or an artist's knife.

  • Selects and inserts screen tints in film flat, using knowledge of dot percentages required to obtain specific colors.

  • Cuts masks and arranges negatives to prepare for contact printing, plate exposure, or proof making.

  • Assembles and aligns negatives or positives to assure register and fit with units of color.

  • Determines proportions needed to reduce or enlarge photographs and graphics to fit the designated area, using a calculator or proportion scale.

  • Determines or approves plans and page sequences to lay out the job for a specific printing press.

  • Examines proof returned by the customer and makes corrections according to the customer's specifications.

  • Draws ruled lines and borders around negatives.

  • Sends completed flat to the proofing area or platemaking area for preparation of final proof.

  • Touches up imperfections, using opaque and brush-on negatives, and needle and crayon pencils on photographs.
